Battle of Apes combines the fast-paced running mechanics of one game with the strategic merging and battling elements of another. Players begin each level by navigating obstacles and collecting characters. However, upon completing the level, collected characters are distributed onto a grid where they merge and evolve. These merged characters then engage in battles against powerful boss enemies, offering a unique and engaging gameplay experience that blends action, strategy, and progression.
This unique blend of gameplay mechanics offers a fresh and engaging experience, challenging players to master both speed and strategy in their quest for victory.
Role
I contributed to the project not only in Development but was Leading the Game Design and LevelDesign, I oversaw the design and creation of gameplay mechanics and level layouts, drawing inspiration from acclaimed games. Collaborating closely with a 3D artist, I curated an immersive art style and meticulously designed diverse characters, enemies, tracks, and obstacles. Implementing a seamless transition from a fast-paced runner format to a strategic merging grid required intricate planning and execution. Additionally, I crafted the UI elements and managed their backend integration, ensuring a smooth and intuitive user experience throughout the game. This multifaceted role demanded creativity, strategic thinking, and attention to detail to deliver an engaging and cohesive gaming experience.
Challenges
In developing Battle of Apes, I faced multifaceted challenges across game design, level design, and UI design. As a game designer, integrating the dynamic gameplay elements of both Runner and Grid Merge Fighter. Balancing the fast-paced obstacle navigation with the strategic merging mechanics required meticulous planning to ensure a seamless transition between gameplay phases.
Additionally, as a level designer, crafting levels that offered engaging challenges while facilitating smooth transitions to the merging grid demanded careful consideration of pacing and difficulty progression.
Simultaneously, as a UI designer, creating an intuitive interface that guided players through both gameplay phases while maintaining visual coherence presented its own set of complexities. Overcoming these challenges demanded creative problem-solving and a keen eye for harmonizing diverse gameplay mechanics, ultimately resulting in a cohesive and immersive gaming experience for players to enjoy.
